How we protect your information
This summary explains how participant data is collected, used, and safeguarded. It follows the institutionally approved research and data-protection plan.
1. Who we are
Digital Detox is a research programme run by a university research division. This policy explains how participant information is handled for the study.
2. What we collect
We collect the information you provide: registration details (name or participant code, email), eligibility and consent responses, demographic and smartphone-use information, questionnaire responses, and activity records. We also log basic participation events (for example, when a module is opened or a form is submitted).
3. How we use it
Your responses are used only for the approved research purposes described in the participant information: understanding smartphone-use patterns, delivering the programme, and analysing outcomes. Automated scoring is applied to questionnaires; you cannot change calculated scores.
4. De-identification
On registration you are assigned a unique participant ID. Research data is stored separately from identifying details, and exported datasets use your participant ID rather than your name or email address.
5. Security
We use secure authentication, encrypted connections, role-based access, and database-level access controls so that participants can only view their own records and researchers cannot expose one participant's responses to another.
6. Data retention & withdrawal
Data is retained for the period defined in the approved research protocol. You may request withdrawal at any time. Depending on your consent, previously collected de-identified data may be retained to preserve research integrity; you may also request that your account be disabled.
7. Your rights & contact
You can access your own records, request withdrawal, and ask questions about how your data is used. For any privacy request, contact the research team via the Contact page.
